Document Description
California State Parks and California Department of Fish and Game propose to restore 109 hectares (270 acres) of nearshore dune habitat in the southern unit of Tolowa Dunes State Park (TDSP) as well as 22 hectares (53 acres) in the California Department of Fish and Game-managed Lake Earl Wildlife Area (LEWA). The primary goals of the project are to restore areas damaged by European beachgrass infestation and off-highway vehicle (OHV) use. The project proposes to restore natural dune processes by removing European beachgrass (Ammophila arenaria L.), re-establishing pre-invasion dune topography and sand movement, and promoting re-vegetation by native dune plants. These efforts will increase the amount of suitable habitat for the federally threatened western snowy plover as well as other native dune-adapted plants and animals. The project will involve an intergrated approach to beachgrass control with treatment methods that include prescribed burning, herbicide application and hand pulling.
