Document Description
The US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is proposing to implement an on-going programmatic gravel injection project with the placement of sand, gravel, and cobble directly into the lower Yuba River channel downstream of Daguerre Point Dam (DPD). This project is in conjunction with the Corp's Operation and Maintenance requirements of removing upstream sediment to maintain fish passage through the fish ladder at Daguerre Point Dam. The current sediment management plan requires the Corps to monitor and remove sediment upstream of DPD when the channel becomes less than 30 feet wide and 3 feet deep. The Corps currently removes all excavated material completely from the streambed and then transports it to a landfill. The proposed plan is to use the material excavated from above DPD, and place it immediately downstream of the dam in the plunge pool. This activity may take place on an annual basis during the first two weeks in August (August 1 through August 15). The proposed action will serve to enhance spawning habitat downstream of DPD, and continue to keep sediment from blocking the upstream end of the fish ladder. Additionally, this project may reduce predatory fish that prey on young salmonoids. This project is supported by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the California Department of Fish and Game.
