Document Description
The Ventura County Watershed District (VCWPD) proposes to remove giant reed (Arundo donax) within the upper San Antonio Creek watershed. Where castor bean (Ricimus communis) grows in close proximity to those creek reaches where giant reed occurs, VCWPD proposes to remove the castor bean as well. The objectives of the Upper San Antonio Creek Watershed Giant Reed Removal Project are to: Restore biological habitat, including special-status species habitat; Reduce flood hazards; Reduce fire risks; Improve water quality; and Enhance water suply reliability and groundwater recharge.
The Project would remove giant reed where it occurs along the upper San Antonio, McNell, Thacher and Reeves Creeks. The distribution of giant reed within these creeks is patchy; overall, its percent cover relative to other vegetation is faily low (less than about 20%). However, there are a few locations where its percent cover is as much as 76%
