Document Description
CALFIRE crews will be utilized to maintain the southern portion of the Red Hill Fuelbreak. Crews will remove dead surface fuels and resprouting vegetation to maintain the effectiveness of the fuelbreak. Additionally, crews will extend the fuelbreak in two locations to protect the neighboring community of Cedar Glen. The second phase of the project is to maintain the trail systems throughout the county park by cutting and removing encroaching and dead vegetation. Material generated will be burned in piles, chipped or made into firewood. Piles will be located only in areas previously used as burn piles away from known archaeological resources.

Reasons for Exemption
The CAL FIRE Unit completed an environmental review to confirm this project is exempt and no exceptions apply. The Natural Diversity Database was reviewed and yielded one listed species near the project area. Habitat will not be negatively affected and will potentially increase the overall amount of suitable habitat for the listed species. The Cal FIRE Regional Archaeologist participated in the environmental review and had no concerns. She believes there will be no impacts to any archaeological resources within the project area. The project is categorically exempt as Minor Alterations to Land and will not have a significant impact on the environment. The project will be conducted upon land under a previously treated under an approved VMP and 1038 (b) timber harvesting exemptions. The Red Hill fuelbreak is important in the protection of the surrounding communities and must be maintained to retain effectiveness as part of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Documentation of the environmental review completed in support of this Notice of Exemption is on file in CAL FIRE's Riverside Unit.
