Document Description
The Sacramento River Bridge foundation (spread footings built on bedrock) on State Route 273 in Shasta County in Redding may have scour problems or may need additional support due to tension demands. This bridge (#06-0014) is fracture critical and has a sufficiency rating of 66 (relatively low, Federal Standards). This 73-year old bridge (constructed 1935; widened 1961) has minor structural steel cracks and most steel elements exhibit chalky or dirt paint with occasional speckles of rust. The purpose of the project is to establish if there are foundation problems. To do this, foundation borings are required. Caltrans purposes to drill four borings through the deck to minimize environmental impacts. The foundation borings could be from 50 to 100 feet deep. Depending on the type of material encountered and availability of an additional drilling rig, the work could take up to a month.
