The road right-of-way is being abandoned and shifted to the west to preserve the existing irrigation ditch (commonly known as the Lone Tree Canal), which provides critical habitat for the Giant Garter Snake. Preserving the irrigation ditch was a requirement of the approved Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service.
