Pursuant to Chapter 6.8 of the Health and Safety Code, Section 25300, the project is the DTSC's approval to implement the Empire Mine State Historic Park Mine Yard Area Remedial Action Alternatives Report, Alternative 5, Complete Removal Mine/Mill Material and Replacement with Imported Fill and Gravel Surfacing for the Empire Mine State Historic Park. Alternative 5 will completely remove mine and mill materials with metals concentrations above the defined risk-based criteria for the site thereby eliminating potential exposure pathways for human receptors and allow unrestricted, future use in the Stamp Mill foundation area of the park. Project activities include the following: excavation of approx. 1,175 cubic yards of contaminated materials within the Mine Yard/Mill areas up to be a depth of 60 inches, offsite disposal of contaminated materials to an authorized hazardous waste disposal facility, and placement of approx. 965 cubic yards of clean fill and 210 cubic yards of gravel surfacing to replace the contaminated materials areas.
