Document Description
This is a slide repair project located at the old "Fountain Curve" section of SR 299 in Shasta County. In Fall 2007 Caltrans completed 02-3705U-a realignment and profile correction project along this same section of SR 299. After realignment, a landslide occurred that caused major damage to the roadway and partially closed the highway. The hillside above the roadway continues to slide, with cracks up to 6 feet in height. To protect the hillside and roadway access, Caltrans proposes to build three retaining walls, install a drainage system, and reconstruct the roadway. All work will occur within disturbed soils in previously excavated cut slopes, and staging and parking of equipment will occur in a previously established pullout along the southern edge of the traveled way. Construction easements will be needed to build the retaining walls. Caltrans initiated 106 consultation following provisions of the January 2004 Programmatic Agreement. In a letter dated 5-15-08, SHPO concurred with a Finding of No Adverse Effect with standard conditions. The portion of the site within the area of direct impact does not contribute to the eligibility of the historic property in question. Caltrans will establish an Environmentally Sensitive Area to protect the remaining portion of the site from inadvertent damage during construction. An archaeologist and Native American monitor will monitor all ground disturbing activities. No soil will be placed behind the souldier pile wall adjacent to the private driveway on the west end of the tieback wall, and no compaction will occur behind this wall. Only hand-held mechanized equipment shall operate behind the tieback retaining wall. No permits will be needed. Equipment shall not operate with in the ordinary high water mark of any jurisdictional waters. If construction equipment must span drainage or other waterway, measures shall be put into place to ensure compliance. The project meets all air quality conformity requirements; transportation conformity does not apply to this project.
