Document Description
Pond "J" project at the Unimin site in Ione. Pond J is located approximately one mile southwest of the mine's main processing plant. An existing dam, about 80 feet high and 1,000 feet in crest length is located at the site. The proposed dam would be located approximately 1,000 feet to the existing dam's southwest. Most of the area between the existing and proposed dam has been stripped and graded as part of the past mining and dam construction activities.
Proposed are two segments to the new dam: Section 1 would be located at Pond J's southwest side and will be approximately 800 feet long and 35 feet high; Section 2 would be located along Pond J's south and southeast sides and will be approximately 1,450 feet long and up to 30 feet high. Once the dam is completed, Pond J would be able to hold approximately 1,544 acre feet of water and cover a surface area of approximately 68.4 acres. This area would eventually be filled with mine tailings (e.g. sand). Approximately 110,000 cubic yards of fill material would be used for the dam and approximately 10,000 cubic yards would be associated with the excavation and backfill for the dam.
