Document Description
During the winter of 2005-2006, high rainfall and high tides led to the breaching of a levee along Railroad Slough near Schellville, California. The resulting flooding in Camp 2 on the west side of an existing railroad right-of-way led to overtopping and erosion of the railroad embankment. This resulted in flooding of the area east of the embankment, which led to overtopping and severe breaching of the levee system at several points along Steamboat Slough. As a result, both areas were flooded and continuously subjected to daily tidal activity. The Department of Fish and Game recently conducted a temporary repair of the levee and de-watered the site. The North Coast Railroad Authority (NCRA), who owns a perpetual right-of-way across the site, will be repairing the railroad embankment in-kind, and then will reinforce the embankment to become the new levee. Rather than permanently repairing the existing levee, the Department of Fish and Game proposes to relocate the levee from its existing location to the railroad embankment, and allow the eastern part of the site to naturally return to tidal wetlands.
