Document Description
The Department of General Services/Real Estate Services Division has approved a request to construct a small memorial sculpture to commemorate the Sisters of Mercy in California. The figures will be slightly larger than life-sized. The legislation authorizes the placement of the memorial in Capitol Park near the State Capitol Building given the organization's historical significance and because the Sisters once owned the grounds on which the Capitol is now situated.

Reasons for Exemption
The project involves construction and location of a sculpture on existing State-owned land at the Capitol Park and is a minor alteration to land with a slope of less than 10%. Landscaping will be relatively unchanged and new plantings will border the sculpture with shrubs consistent with those currently in place. The sculpture's site location, sculpture dimensions, materials, and pedestrian accessibility have been reviewed by the California State Historical Preservation Office to determine the project's affect on the Capitol Park's historical significance. Pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 5024(f), Department of General Services received the State Historical Preservation Office's concurrence that the project will not adversely affect historical resources at the Capitol Park, the Capitol Building, or Annex.
