Document Description
The City of South Lake Tahoe is proposing to implement an obstruction management plan which will include topping and/or removal of trees to comply with the safety requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and California Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics (DOA). These regulations require that obstructions be removed from specific areas surrounding airport runways to provide for the safe approach and departure of aircraft. The regulatory agencies have notified the airport that such obstructions must be removed to maintain aircraft operations at the airport. The program will include an initial effort to bring the airport into compliance with these regulations, removing or topping numerous trees which have grown to become obstructions in the last few decades when little obstruction removal was completed, and then continuing efforts at approximately five-year intervals to top/trim trees before they become obstructions to maintain compliance over time. Additionally, any Lodgepole Pine or Jeffry Pine trees that recruit onto the meadow will be removed prior to the time they can adversely impact the meadow community or the airports aviation requirements. Removal of small trees that have not reached a sufficient size to require permits to remove them will be the most effective way to prevent forest encroachment into the meadow. This procedure would be undertaken on an annual basis under the combined direction of the SLT Airport and the property owner.
