Document Description
Project would improve this section of SR-58 to conform to the previously accomplished 4-lane sections. The upgrade of the existing two-lane section of SR 58 will be accomplished by expanding it into a 4-lane expressway, from the Kern County Line to 7.5 mi east of US395 KP 0 to 20.76 (PM 0 to 12.9). The improvements would add a second expressway travel lane to both directions of travel up to 12.9 mi long. The work will also include the construction of an access controlled new northerly alignment, joining existing SR58 at KP 5.59 (PM 9.0), a railroad grade separation (overhead), and a spread diamond interchange (separation) at the intersection of SR58 and US 395. This proposed diamond interchange with US 395 would be located approx. one third of a mile north of the existing junction. Project will result in impacts 419.76 acres of Desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) and Mohave ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus mohavensis) habitat. The project is expected to result in incidental take of desert tortoise and Mohave ground squirrel, which are designated as a threatened species under the CESA. The ITP referenced above as issued by CDFW authorizes incidental take of species listed under CESA that may occur as a result of Project implementation.
