The site is an existing rock quarry that has been mine intermittently for over 50 years. The site is located in a mixed conifer/hardwood forest adjacent to the South Fork Eel River. Surrounding land uses include a mixture of agriculture, timber harvesting, rural residential, recreation and surface mining. Ranching occurs half-mile to the north and south. The Town of Garberville is located half mile to the northeast, the 8-lot Rivercrest Subdivision to the east, Tooby Park approximately 700 feet south across the river, Randall Sand and Gravel extraction and processing operations downstream, and the Garberville Airport one-quarter mile southwest.
