Document Description
The proposed project is the demolition of a City-owned structure at 1029 9th Street. Current condition of structure makes it economically and structurally impractical to rebuild. A fire on September 24, 2004 damaged the structure to the extent that repair or restoration is cost prohibitive. The remaining structure has health and safety considerations.

Reasons for Exemption
The proposed structure is a former railroad express office built around 1915, that was significantly altered in the 1970s when it was converted to a restaurant. At the time of conversion, this 50 by 100 foot building was the property of the Union Pacific Railroad. In the late 1980's the entire block that this building is located on was purchased by the City of Modesto. Except for the restaurant site, the remaining portion of this block was remodeled as the Downtown Transportation Center in 1990. Today the Transportation Center is in the center of operations for the City and County's fixed-route bus systems as well as the local terminal for Greyhound Bus Lines. The City's Landmark Preservation Commission declared that this site has "no intrinsic historic value" and supported building demolition. The Modesto City Council approved demolition of the remaining structure at their May 10, 2005 meeting.
