Present Land Use
As described in the Land Use Section of the Initial Study, the current land use designation under the 1985 American River Parkway Plan is a "Protected Area" at the Upper and Lower Beach sites and "Developed Recreation" at the Kiosk and Parking Lot sites. Sacramento County General Plan designates the entire project area as Open Space. The lands adjacent to the project area, on the landward side of the levee, are designated Residential.
Document Description
The proposed project includes establishing native grass and herbaceous species and controlling non-native, invasive plants in two, 2.5 acre areas in the floodplain of the Lower American River, between the Mayhew Drain and the Gristmill Access Road. Proposed actions will include removing existing nonnative invasive herbaceous weeds with mechanical mowing, hand tools, and herbicide use; removing nonnative invasive trees by cutting, painting stumps with herbicide, and chipping woody debris; installing and operating an irrigation system, and planting native grasses and forbs. Irrigation, weed removal, and supplemental planting area expected to occur for 1-3 years after the project is installed in Fall, 2004. Please refer to the Initial Study for a more detailed description of the project purpose, location, proposed construction methods, schedule, and environmental effects.
