Document Description
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is proposing to partially remove Sunol and Niles Dam. There are three primary and equal project objectives: 1) Remove barriers to fish passage in keeping with the Alameda Creek Fisheries Restoration Workgroup goal of restoring a self-sustaining population of steelhead to the Alameda Creek watershed. 2) Reduce or eliminate an existing public safety hazard and related SFPUC risk management concerns. 3) Perform dam removal in an environmentally sensitive manner.

City: Fremont Sunol Dam is located in the Niles Canyon reach of Alameda Creek at river mile 16.2. Highway 84 (Niles Canyon Road) parallels the creek through Niles Canyon, and lies to the north of the dam. Niles Dam is located on Alameda Creek at river mile 12.8, near the downstream end of Niles Canyon. Highway 84 (Niles Canyon Road) lies directly adjacent to the dam site.
