Document Description
The proposed project is the interim use of the former Matson/SSAT Container Terminal at Berths 206-209 capped at the capacity achieved during the last five years of full operation. In 1959, Matson Navigation made its first shipment of 20 cargo containers, marking the beginning of the containerized cargo revolution at the Port of Los Angeles. Matson began to operate Berths 206-209 as a container and auto terminal facility in 1970, prior to the adoption of CEQA. In 1999 Matson's lease was taken over by SSA Terminal, Inc. (SSAT), a joint venture between Matson Navigation and Stevedoring Sevices of America (SSA). Both Matson and SSAT opted as a municipal wharf with no lease or permit limitations on cargo throughout. The primary objective of the proposed project is to allow for use of the existing facilities at the Berth 206-209 Container Terminal on Terminal Island while including green measures to minimze environmental impacts.
