Document Description
The Science Annex will be an adaptive reuse of the existing "Laundry" building located west of the academic core on the CSUCI campus. This project is a building component that was approved as part of the original Campus Master Plan approved in 1998. The 1998 Campus master Plan FEIR indicated that the adaptive reuse of the Laundry Building as academic space would constitute a beneficial impact to historic resources by preserving key components of the structure that was used as part of the Camarillo State Hospital. The "Laundry" building is one-story, 60-70 years old and constructed of poured-in-place concrete with both flat and pitched roofs. The proposed reuse will include five science laboratories, three classrooms, and necessary support space to operate as an annex to the new Science Building. The approximate building area is 22,000 gsf. The design will acknowledge and enhance the historical character of both the interior and exterior of the existing building. The project design will be fully ADA-compliant and will also comply with the CSU Trustees' Seismic Policy for renovation of existing buildings. Primary beneficiaries of the project will be the students and faculty at the CSU, Channel Islands.
