Document Description
The River Road Bridge crosses the Salinas River in the community of San Miguel in northern San Luis Obispo County. The existing bridge was scheduled for seismic retrofitting but reactive aggregates in the existing bridge pilings have decreased the bridge's load carrying capacity, making it unsafe for long term vehicular use. The proposed project would construct a new concrete bridge immediately upstream (south) and approximately 10 feet from the existing bridge. The new two-lane bridge would consist of 8 spans supported by 7 pilings placed within the river bed. The pilings would be approximately 7 feet in diameter and constructed using cast-in-drilled holes approximately 70 to 80 feet deep. No construction activities would occur within 15 feet of the wetted channel. Construction would occur over a two year period. Upon completion of the new bridge, the existing deteriorated bridge would be demolished and removed from the site. Because the project is within known habitat of San Joaquin kit fix (Vulpes macrotis multica) and southern steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus), a biological monitor would be onsite during construction to ensure no impacts occur to these or other special-status species. Issuance of a Streambed Alteration Agreement Number 1600-2003-0085-3 pursuant to Fish and Game Code Section 1601.
