Document Description
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) proposes to replace an existing 20-linear foot section of damaged concrete piping in the Box Springs Feeder pipeline with a welded steel pipe. Cracks were originally identified in this section of the pipeline in 1989 and an internal steel band was installed to stop the leaking. A pipeline inspection conducted in January 2003 revealed that the internal band at this location had failed and was no longer functioning as designed. In addition, new cracks were discovered extending beyond the temporary internal band. Metropolitan proposes to fabricate and install the new pipe section during an April 2003 shutdown. During the shutdown, Metropolitan proposes to also inspect several other locations where cracks in this area of the Box Springs Feeder pipeline were previously discovered and temporary bands were installed.
