Document Description
Implementing the proposed Interim Remediation Action Plan will involve installing an interim groundwater remediation system (bio-treatment barrier) along the southwest side of Neil Armstrong way, which is an existing service/access road. The bio-treatment barrier will be placed between the affected groundwater and wetlands. It will be operational for at least two years, starting in August 2003. The proposed bio-treatment system consists of a backfilled trench (285 feet long, seven to ten feet deep, and two feet wide) that contains petroleum-degrading micro-organisms, an oxygen injection system, and vertical and horizontal slotted casings that could serve as groundwater extraction points in the trench, if needed. The hydrocarbons in the groundwater will be biodegraded by a proprietary microbial culture (mixture). Oxygen will be injected into the groundwater within the trench to enhance biological activity. Groundwater monitoring wells will also be installed adjacent to the trench to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment.
