Document Description
The Department of Mental Health proposes a seismic retrofit of the 70 Building at Patto n State Hospital. The 70 Building is considered seismic deficient and is classified at Risk Level VI on a scale of I to VII with Risk Level VII being the highest risk level. This means that in a maximum credible earthquake, there would be extensive structural and non-structural damage, with collaps of some of the building components likely to occur. The seismic retrofit is necessary for the life and safety and security of all the occupants, including patienst and staff. The proposed seismic retrofit project would bring the building to Risk Level III. The project includes exterior modifications to the building including construction of piles and buttresses. The buttresses would be 15 inch thick reinforced concrete walls supported by three-foot thick reinforced concrete slab/pile cap with twelve 18-inch diameter drilled and cast-in-place piles. Exterior modifications would also include strengthening the walls with shotcrete. Interior modifications would include installation of steel drag beams, and reinforcement of connections between slab and columns and slab to walls. The seismic retrofit project would allow all windows to remain open in the building. Approved temporary modular units may be used as swing space to temporarily house patients during the construction phase of the project. The modular(s) would be sited in the field west of the 70 Building and/or in the area north of the 30 Building. If the modular(s) are to be back-filled or re-used following project construction, any subsequent use would be subject to separate environmental review.
