Document Description
The purpose of the action is to reduce the population of the California ground squirrel from specific areas of the Base and to maintain a low population at MARB in the future. The areas proposed for California ground squirrel control were selected based on the need to control existing and expanding hazards to ground, air, and operations safety, and public health. MARB proposes to control the dispersion of California ground squirrel colonies and thereby limit potential damage to aircraft from foreign object damage (FOD) as a result of their burrowing activity adjacent to the runway and taxiways, as well as reduce the potential transmission of rodent-vectored disease. However, the population of California ground squirrels at MARB appears to be declining due to the current drought in Southern California (Price 2002).
