- The groundwater storage program would provide for 60,000 acre feet (af) of excess Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) surface water to be delivered via existing connections and stored in the in the Orange County groundwater basin when available. When called by the Metropolitan during shortages of imported water, 20,000 af per year would be extracted from the Orange County groundwater basin and decrease by an equivalent amount the demand for Metropolitan firm deliveries; thereby, making additional Metropolitan firm deliveries available to the region.
