Document Description
A Coastal Development Permit and Special Permit are required for the phased development of a botanical garden facility adjacent to the College of the Redwoods. The project will include monument and entry signing, parking areas, various garden areas, fences and gates, and landscaping. A Special Permit is required to establish the required parking for a use that is not enumerated in the zoning ordinance. The project is to be developed by the applicant, Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation, on a 44.5 acre site leased from the College of the Redwoods and directly north of the existing college facilities. Phased development of the site is expected to occur over a very long period of time and is dependent upon funding for each phase. The initial plans for the Gardens are discussed below and shown in the Revised Master Plan. The individual gardens within the Humboldt Botanical Garden will be composed of a plant palette known to thrive in the Humboldt Region, thus creating a unique botanical garden that cannot occur anywhere else. The family based plant collection of natives, exotics, and ornamentals will display interesting color, texture, and form. The Garden will serve as a living museum with interpretive, educational, and scientific value.
