Document Description
The Magpie Creek Diversion Channel (MCDC) was constructed in the 1950s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Hydrologic evaluation by USACE and SAFCA have determined that homes and businesses in the vicinity of Magpie Creek have less than 100-year flood protection. During a 14-year of greater flood event, MCDC levees is overtopped and levees are outflanked during a 2-year or greater event. When more severe events occur, USACE is projecting extensive flooding along historic Magpie Creek, affecting residential, commercial, industrial, and public structures. USACE, SAFCA and The Reclamation Board are proposing to construct a project to protect existing structures from flooding up to the 170-year event. The proposed project includes: 1) construction of a floodwall (2,100 feet) along the top of the existing left bank levee of the MCDC; 2) construction of a levee (1,000 feet) along the west side of Raley Boulevard south from the Magpie Creek bridge; 3) Acquisition and protection of a 72-acre flood plain on the east and west sides of Raley Boulevard; 4) Construction of a culvert under the Sacramento Northern Railway embankment.
