Document Description
The project consists of the replacement of an antiquated 16,000 square foot building with a modern 27,000 square foot library building on the same site. The existing building was built in 1952 for a maximum of 60,000 volumes. Based upon needs, a study of existing physical facilities, and community workshops, a new library is proposed that will be able to accommodate the 100,000 volumes currently housed in the library. In addition the proposed new library would meet ADA requirements and fire/life/safety/seismic requirements, which the current building does not. It would also include modern telecommunications and data facilities, which are almost impossible to install in the current library because walls and floors are constructed of concrete. The City of San Marino has developed a cooperative arrangement with the adjacent San Marino School District to provide a lifelong learning center in the new building. In addition the new facility would include a community meeting room and facility to store and present local historic materials. Adequate parking is available on and adjacent to the site, primarily off-street. The building would relate to the surrounding community in a manner similar to the existing building, with a two-story section focused on Huntington Drive, and a one-story portion along the more residential West Drive.
