Document Description
Continuation of an existing shaded fuelbreak behind homes that lie at the base of the coastal mountain range, on the west side of the City of Ukiah. The project is designed to protect homes by reducing the fuel hazard behind them. Practice components of the shaded fuelbreak are restricted to pruning existing trees 10-12 feet up the base to remove fuel "ladders", thinning pole-sized trees (less than 6dbh), and manual removal of flammable shrubs, such as chemise and broom. Ornamentals and special landscaping features will be preserved as requested by individual landowners. Selective thinning and vegetation removal is restricted to a corridor approximately seven miles long by one hundred feet wide. The ground will not be disturbed. Slash from the project will be chipped and spread.

Exempt Status
Categorical Exemption
Type, Section or Code
Class 4, Section 15304
Reasons for Exemption
Allows minor alteration of vegetation, including fuel management activities within 100 feet of structures to reduce the volume of flammable vegetation, provided the activities do not result in the taking of endangered, rare, or threatened plant or animal species or significant erosion and sedimentation of surface waters. CDF has determined 100 feet is necessary due to extra hazardous fire conditions. According to the DFG Natural Diversity Database, there are no listed plant or animal species affected by this project. There will be no impact to historic or cultural resources due to lack of ground disturbance.
