Document Description
The University of California, Los Angeles proposes to construct two facilities in the Core campus zone. One facility is proposed to house the newly created NanoSystems Institute to accommodate research initiatives in the emerging field of nanosystems. The second facility is proposed to replace the existing Engineering 1 building to accommodate engineering teaching and research functions currently located in the existing Engineering 1 building. This building has been scheduled for replacement due to costly seismic upgrades necessary for code compliance. The proposed NanoSystems building (approximately 180,000 gsf, 7-stories) would be located on the west side of the Court of Sciences, south of Boelter Hall. The main entrance would be from the Court of Sciences with three above grade levels designed to span over the top of Parking Structure 9. Project construction is anticipated to last for approximately 31 months beginning in the Fall of 2002. The Engineering 1 replacement facility (approximately 100,000 gsf, 4-5- stories) would be located on Westwood Plaza, south of Ackerman Union. Project construction is anticipated to last for approximately 35 months beginning in the Winter of 2003.
