Document Description
The Operator proposes to control emergent vegetation in the BLM Spring channel with hand-held and boat mounted gas powered reciprocating cutters and hand tools. Currently, there exists an unnatural abundance of aquatic vegetation resulting from artificial ponding of water. This artificial ponding has now been reversed. The aquatic plants will be cut below the waterline, and the cut tops will be piled onto adjacent "tule thatch" and left to decompose out of the water. Submerged roots and stems will be removed by hand or with hand tools in problem areas, and distributed on the tule thatch. Water flow which is currently dissipated as over-bank flow will gradually concentrate back in the historic channel after the blockage is removed. Work to facilitate removal of largemouth bass may occur at any time of year. Aquatic vegetation clearing will be done between September 1st thru March 15th to avoid potential impact to bird nests. Over time the effort and amount of plant material removed is expected to decline precipitously to maintenance levels. Regular maintenance 1-2 times per year is expected to keep the channel clear.
