Document Description
The proposewd project would alter the streambed to allow reapir of the Interstate 5 bridges that cross the San Mateo Creek. Erosion has resulted in exposure of the footings at three of the four piers; additional erosion could result in failure of the bridges. The proposed project would stabilize the bridge piers so the structures can withstand additional scour. The project includes: installation of 44 piles around each of the three piers (piers #2, 3 & 4); the new piles will be tied into the existing piers with rebar and the footings will be enlarged to accommodate the new piles; permanent steel sheet piles will be placed arpund pier 5 to prevent erosion; erosion reapir at both abutments consisting of recompacting the slopes, and installing filter fabric and rock slope protection. In order to minimize potential impacts to sensitive species and allow work during minor rain events, the work area will be enclosed within coffer dams constructed of sheet piles. No work will occur outside the coffer dams, and all construction materials and debris will be confined within the dams.
