Document Description
The proposed hazardous waste facility permit would allow General Atomics (GA) to continue operating its existing treatment and storage units and to add two container rinsing units to manage mixed waste generated onsite. Mixed waste is defined as a hazardous waste which contains a radioactive component. GA was granted interim status on March 23, 1989 to treat and store mixed waste. The mixed waste is generated from on-site activities such as research and development (R&D) projects, and as the facility decommissions and decontaminates the R&D projects. No more than 5,060 gallons of liquid mixed waste and 32,500 cubic feet of solid mixed waste may be stored. Mixed waste storage is limited to one year. The storage of mixed waste is necessary to allow for the consolidation, profiling and the availability of off-site treatment and disposal facilities. Limited quantities of mixed waste may be treated on-site by physical means, chemical neutralization, and stabilization. The permit authorization requires GA to manage mixed waste in a manner that is protective of human health and the environment. The permit limits GA to store mixed waste in sealed containers, in secure, designated areas. All operations will occur in existing facilities. No other activities or changes to the facility or changes to the facility's operations are allowed.
