Hospital Road Seasonal/Temporary Low Water Crossing

The project involves the annual construction and removal of a seasonal, low-water crossing of San Benito River at Hospital Road, between Cienega Road and Southside Road, in San Benito County. The project will be undertaken yearly until a permanent low-water crossing structure can be constructed to replace a crossing structure that was destroyed by major storm events in 1998 and 1999. At the end of the seasonal heavy rainfall period (normally after May 15th), County work forces will construct an earthen roadbed with base rock surface and metal culverts, within the San Benito River channel. Later, before the start of heavy winter rains (before November1st). The roadbed and culverts will be removed, and the storm channel will be restored to its previous condition. The seasonal roadbed measures approximately 775 feet long and five (5) feet high at the maximum. The width of the temporary roadway structure will vary from 18 feet at the top to approximately 60 feet at the bottom with a side slope ratio of 2 to 1 (horizontal to vertical). Approximately 2000 cubic yards of material will be used to construct the roadway. Two 4 foot diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culverts approximately 60 feet in length, will be installed to allow any low-flow water levels to pass under the roadbed. During the rainy season (from November 1st to May 15th), the earthen material and associated culverts will be pushed up out of the channel and piled for storage on an upper terrace, above floodstage. Silt fences and hay bales will be installed to prevent fines from washing into the river.
