Document Description
The project is located in San Luis Obispo County along Highway 101 at KP 34.6. The work is in San Luis Obispo Creek, a perennial stream tributary to the Pacific Ocean. This project is a fish ladder repair/restoration that has resulted from the terms and conditions in the Biological Opinion from the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS). The work will result in the removal of the existing, poorly functioning fish ladder and its replacement with a series of rock weirs designed in conformance with the California Department of Fish and Game's "Salmonid Habitat Restoration Manual". To accomplish the project, the work area will be temporarily dewatered by construction of a coffer dam upstream of the work area using clean gravel and visquine. A second coffer dam of the same material will be constructed below the work area to isolate the construction area. Water will be diverted around the work area through a 42 inch pipe. The total work area to be dewatered is approximately 85 meters. Upon completion of the work, the coffer dams will be removed and the area returned to its prior grade. To access the stream, the willow trees along the bank of the creek will need to be removed. Once dry, the work area will be excavated and a filter fabric placed in the area where the weirs will be constructed. A foundation of smaller rock will be placed on the filter fabric. Then a total of four rock weirs consisting of 1 and 2 ton rock will be built across the channel at varying heights. The areas between the weirs and the ends of the weirs will be backfilled with a clean cohesive material imported from off-site. The streambed will then be lined with clean sand and gravel. Issuance of a Streambed Alteration Agreement Number R3-2001-0749 pursuant to Fish and Game Code Section 1601.
