Replace Roof Building 196 - Napa State Hospital

The proposed project consists of replacement of the roof of Building 196 at Napa State Hospital. The project is needed because the roof is leaking and causing extensive interior damage to the building. Building 196 was originally constructed in 1949 and has the original flat clay tile roof over Unit T-5/T-6, Unit T-7/T-8, and the K-2 Kitchen. The project would entirely remove and replace the existing roof for Building 196, which includes Unit T-5/T-6, Unit T-7/T-8, Unit T-9, and the K-2 Kitchen. Unit T-5/T-6, Unit T-7/T-8, Unit T-9 are covered with a flat clay tile roof, which has an area of 53,530 square feet. The project would also replace the roofing materials on the K-2 Kitchen, which has an 3,257 square-foot roof constructed of built-up roof felts and asphalt. The project would replace the flat clay tile roof with new clay tiles that will match the size and color of the original tiles as much as possible. The project does not involve expansion of existing use. Due to the age of Building 196, the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) was consulted pursuant to Section 5024.5 of the Public Resources Code. Based on the site visit and consultation, the SHPO has provided the Lead Agency with written concurrence that the project would not represent a significant effect on historical resources. The Lead Agency shall ensure conformance to design standards set by the Secretary of the Interior pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act for any modifications as a result of this proposed project.
