Document Description
Repairs of approximately 95 sites of levee slope erosion that occured in the floods of 1997 resulted in placement of an excess of approximately 500,000 square feet of rock coverage. Those sites range from less than 100 feet to nearly 1,300 feet long, for a total length of 26,000 linear feet that are currently proposed for restoration of vegetative cover in spring and summer of 2001. The sites will mostly be restored by placing 12" of topsoil on the rocked levee slope from above the high tide line up to the edge of the rock cover, often near the hinge point of the levee. A few sites will be restored by stripping the extra rock cover off the levee slope instead of placing topsoil. All sites will then have a soil surface that will be reseeded with native grasses using standard erosion control methods. There will be no in-water work, and no large trees or brush will be removed. These restoration repairs of the levee slopes will have minimal direct environmental impacts, and potential impacts to endangered species will be avoided by environmental surveys conducted by the Corps.
