Document Description
The proposed project would provide a seismic upgrade to the existing Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery building under the "Earthquake Safety and Public Buildings Rehabilitation Bond Act of 1990". This project would involve structural improvements to the building in order to reduce the threat to life safety under future significant ground motions. The project would address four specific areas associated with the seismic condition of the building: 1) The in-plane shear of the stone block masonry walls in the hatchery room; 2) The out-of-plane capacity of the stone block masonry walls in the hatchery workroom; 3) The horizontal diaphragm in the hatchery workroom and tower; and 4) The overturning potential of the tower walls. Because of the historical characteristics of the building, it will be afforded the requisite care that is appropriate for historical resources in seismic upgrade projects of this nature. Planning, design, and implementation of the project would also proceed in a manner that is the least disruptive as possible to the operations of this fully functioning fish hatchery facility.
