Document Description
The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park offers 10,000 acres of protected land, rising from sea level to steep coastal mountains of more than 2,600 feet. The site of logging operations until the 1920s, visitors can still find evidence of logging, mill sites and trestles in the park. The park is dominated by second growth coast redwoods and is bisected by Aptos Creek. Small groves of old-growth coast redwood occur at two locations within the Park. The majority of the land was deeded to the State by the Marks family in 1963. There are approximately 45 miles of trails through the park and several picnic areas. There is a trail camp, located approximately eight miles from the nearest parking lot. The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park General Plan will establish the long-range purpose and management direction for the Park. It will define the framework for resource stewardship, interpretation, and visitor use and services.
