Document Description
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) proposes a building addition of approximately 11,100 gross square feet at the south end of the Basic Sciences Building, consisting of research laboratories, and lab and office support space. The facility will house four high-resolution magnetic scanners for research involving small animal, non-human primate and human subjects. The new space will be dedicated to research activities and will not be a clinical/patient facility. The project is located within the main campus of UCSD, east of Gilman Drive, and north of Osler Lane within the UCSD School of Medicine.

Reasons for Exemption
It has been determined that the Funtional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center is exempt from CEQA under Title 14, California Administrative Code Section 15301 Class 1 (e)(1), additions to existing structures provided that the addition will not result in an increase of more than 50 percent of the floor area of the structures before the addition; and Section 15304 Class 4(a)(b), minor alterations in the condition of land and/or vegetation including grading on land with a slope of less than 10 percent and new landscaping. The fMRI project is exempt Pursuant to Section 15300.2, none of the exceptions cited therein apply to this project. The project will not have a significant project specific or cumulative effect on the environment.
