Document Description
The Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) would provide funding to the Pit Resource Conservation District to construct a locally owned and operated, community-scale sawmill to manufacture lumber, sourcing sawlogs from Modoc, Lassen, and Shasta-Trinity National forests, the Bureau of Land Management, state lands, and other private industrial and non-industrial lands. At full capacity, the 9,000-square-foot sawmill will support approximately 30 jobs and provide an outlet for increasing rates of sawlog harvests through forest restoration, fuel reduction, and post-fire salvage logging. The region served is approximately the Pit River sub-watershed, an area comprising roughly 1.5 million acres. This sawmill is designed to process small-diameter logs with flexibility to match the species present in the service area and regional lumber markets. The SNC funds will specifically be used towards purchasing equipment and supporting operating expenses.
