Contra Costa County Public Works Department plans to widen the existing 24 - 28 foot wide two-lane road to 36 feet in order to provide 6-foot wide paved shoulders and 2-foot wide shoulder backing. The shoulder widening is needed in order to bring the shoulders along this section of Byron Highway up to current design standards. No new travel lanes are proposed and no increase in capacity will occur. Road culverts will be extended in order to accommodate the shoulder widening.
