Document Description
The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is proposing to undertake road upgrades along Byron Highway from Byron Hot Springs Road to the Alameda County line, a distance of ~3.5 miles. The project will be constructed in 2 phases. Phase 1 is ~2,800 ft long and begins just north of Byron Hot Springs Road and ends 800 ft south of Rankin Road. Phase 2 encompasses Byron Highway between the southern end of Phase 1 and the Alameda County line. In the project area, Byron Highway is ~24-28 ft wide (two 12 ft wide travel lanes with 0-2 ft wide paved shoulder on both sides) with gravel shoulders and earthen drainage ditches. The existing ROW varies from 50-200 ft. The proposed ROW will be a minimum of 65 ft wide, which will result in ROW is less than 65 ft wide. The purpose of the project is to provide 6 ft wide paved shoulders and 2 ft wide shoulder backing within the project area. Byron Highway will be widened to ~36 ft to accommodate the 6 ft wide paved shoulders and 2 ft wide shoulder backing. The modifications to the roadway are being implemented in order to bring the shoulders along this section of Byron Highway up to current design standards. No new travel lanes are proposed and no increase in capacity will occur as a result of the shoulder improvements.
