Document Description
This project consists of emergency related repair and reconstruction of two segments of bank erosion along Markleeville Creek. Two Natural Resources Conservation Service Emergency Work Program projects resulting from the 1997 New Years storms have been identified. Alpine County is the lead agency for this project, having reported the damage to NRCS and having been listed as the applicant on the Disater Survey Report. One site (Site 4) consists of reconstruction of a damaged grouted rip-rap bridge protection structure/wingwall at Laramie Street and stabilizing the toe of severly eroded banks at two small locations with rip-rap/vegetation 1) upstream adjacent to the park/library complex, and 2) downstream adjacent to a residence. The second site (called Sites 2 and 3) lies in the stream reach from the bend upstream from the county courthouse to the Highway 89 bridge. In this area, materials deposited during flow events are causing a redirection of stream flow against streambanks, resulting in undercutting, bank erosion, and loss of land, potentially threatening utility lines and county roads if left unchecked. The repair at this site includes stabilizing existing banks through placement of rock in a vortex "hole", rip-rap/vegetation/geogrid at at-risk locations, and installation of rock or log veins along the eroded bank.
