Document Description
This cooperative project between the City of San Jose and "Our City Forest," a non-profit, community-based organization of volunteers, involves the planting of 629 trees various locations throughout the City. "Our City Forest" volunteers will also perform needed tree care, e.g. stake removal, tree-tie adjustment, irrigation, pruning, weeding, fertilization, etc.,, for 700 recently planted trees throughout the City. Grant funding will also be used to conduct a program to educate the public about the importance of urban trees and their need for long-term and appropriate maintenance. It is anticipated that this project will commence June 2000, and be completed by June 2001. Examples of planting sites include neighborhoods around Maurice Dr. and Prospect Road, Appian Way, Horace Mann, Spartan Keys, College park, Nesbit Court, Alviso/Main Street, etc. The trees proposed for this project are non-native ornamentals, selected for their adaptability to local enviromental conditions, disease resistance, appropriateness to the planting site, shade capacity, lack of significance nuisance potential, etc. Fifteen-gallon planting stock will be used. Trees will be planted, staked and tied, watered and maintained in accordance with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's tree planting guidelines. All maintenance practices will be performed in compliance with current arboricultural standards as required by the CDF.

Reasons for Exemption
As lead agency under CEQA, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection finds that this project is Categorically Exempt. This project involves minor alterations toland and vegetation including the planting of new landscaping trees. As this is a heavily disturbed urban environment there is a low likelihood of impacting any significant biological resources. CDF's archaeological staff have reviewed this project and determined that there are no cultural or historic resources present in the project vicinity. CDF's finds that the proposed activities will pose a less than significant impact to the environment including cultural, historic and biological resources.
