Document Description
This project involves the development of a Defensible Fuels Profile Zone (DFPZ) along existing permanent roads. The width of this zone will be approximately 200 feet from either side of the edge of the roadway. This zone width will vary based on topographic features and vegetation conditions. The zone will be developed throught the removal of selected v egetation. This vegetation will be removed by hand-crews utilizing chainsaws and hand tools. Vgetation up to the eight (8) inch diameter class at breast height (dbh), measured at 4.5 feet above the ground, may be removed. Residual trees will be pruned up to ten (10) feet above the ground, with their live crown ratio not reduced below one half. The removed vegetation will be piled and burned and/or chipped. Participation within the project is completely voluntary on the part of landowners.

Reasons for Exemption
The Class 4 Exemption includes minor public or private alterations in the condition of land, water and/or vegetation. An archeaological records search and field survey located six (6) archaeological and/or historical features within the project area. Through consultation with the CDF Regional Archeaoligist, the project was designed so as to not impact these sites. A search of the Natural Diversity Database did not reveal any known occurrences of threatened, endangered and/or species of special concern within the project area. A Registered Professional Forester, in consultation with biological specialists, concluded that this project would not significantly impact biological resources. An Associate Water Resource Control Engineer, for the CRWQCB - Central Valley Region, conducted an on-site review of the project. The engineer felt that the project would not significantly impact water quality. The project is categorically exempt and will not have a significant impact on the environment.
