Document Description
This project, to be carried out by the Sacramento Tree Foundation, a non-profit tree group within the California ReLeaf organization, will provide educational workshops on tree-care practices, emphasizing "hand-on" training. The workshop will provide age-appropriate training volunteers, students, parents and school staff. Current tree planting oractices, irrigation, staking, stake removal, tree-tie adjustment, mulching, and structural pruning of young trees will be covered. The training is scheculed for various city parks and school sites where more than 2000 trees have been planted. This project is intended to foster improved tree-care, stewardship and community involvement. Staff and volunteers will conduct demonstrations and provide hands-on learning opportunities. The trees, planted with funding provided by various urban tree-planting grants, will receive critical, early tree care under the supervision of qualified staff. Sample locations include Citrus Heights Elementary, Florin Elementary, Arcade Middle School, Countryside Park, Mather Regional Park, Mills Middle School, William Daylor High School, etc. Grant funding will also be used to purchase essential tools. It is anticipated that this project will commence March 2000, and be completed at June 2001. All maintenance practices will be performed in compliance with current arboricultural standards as required by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Reasons for Exemption
As lead agency under CEQA, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection finds that this project is Categorically Exempt. This project involves minor alterations to land and vegetation including the planting of new landscaping trees. As this is a heavily disturbed urban environment there is a low likelihood of impacting any significant biological resources. CDF's archaeological staff have reviewed this project and determined that there are no cultural or historic resources present in the project vicinity. CDF's finds that the proposed activities will pose a less than significant impact to the environment including cultural, historic and biological resources.
