Document Description
The Etna Shaded Fuel Break has been in existance since 1979. During the past twenty years, this fuel break has been maintained at various intervals. It has now been several years since any maintenance has been done on this fuel break. The intent of this project is to bring the Etna Fuel Break up to standards. This will be accomplished by performing maintenance on the existing 100-200' wide shaded fuel break, that runs south and west of the City of Etna, CA. This fuel break commences from Sawyers Bar road, just South of Etna Cemetery, and proceeds west for approximately one-half (1/2) mile, following an existing dirt road. This dirt road intersects another North/South dirt road. At this point the fuel break turns north and proceeds one and three-fourths (1 3/4) miles, to the center of section 20, where it then runs east and terminates at State Highway 3.

Reasons for Exemption
The project entails maintenance of an existing shaded fuel break by pruning conifer trees, cutting low-lying brushy vegetation, and piling for burning other forest floor debris. No ground distrubing equipment (i.e. bull dozer, excavator) will be utilized. Hand crews using hand tools will remove branches from any trees greater than eight (8") diameter breast height to a maximum height of twelve (12') feet and remove ground and ladder fuels that could sustain a wildfire. Cut material will be piled and burned. A search of the Natural Diversity Database yielded no listed species within the project area, or those that would likely be affected in the surrounding area. No archaeological sites were observed in the project area that will be impacted by the project.
