Document Description
This is a temporary project to further investigate the feasibility of the groundwater injection-recovery concept in the Seaside Groundwater Basin. Excess winter flow from the Carmel River will be treated to meet drinking water standards, then transported to the Seaside Basin via the existing California-American Water Company (Cal-Am) pipeline that connects the Carmel Valley and Seaside distribution systems. A full-scale test well (and associated pipeline, values and power) will be installed into the Santa Margarita Sandstone aquifer zone. Up to 550 acre-feet of water could be injected during the winter rainy season, depending on weather conditions. No new buildings or changes to existing structures are proposed. Extensive monitoring of water levels and quality will be carried out. The project beneficiaries are Monterey Peninsula water consumers; the project (if successful) could lead to long-term water supply project that would help the community meet the requirements of SWRCB Order WR-95-10.
