Document Description
The University of California, Los Angeles proposes to construct an addition to Knudsen Hall to house the programs of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the College and Letters and Science that are currently scattered in six buildings on campus. Disparate locations for the department functions is a major impediment to the collaborative teaching and research mission of the program. Furthermore, major portions of the existing Physics and Astronomy space is in buildings designed 30 to 40 years ago that do not meet the infrastructure and vibration stability standards of today's physics and astronomy experimental research and teaching programs. The proposed Physics and Astronomy Building (approximately 118,000 gross square feet) would be four stories with two basement levels, and would connect to the west side of Knudsen Hall in the "core zone" of the main campus. Construction of the Physics and Astronomy Building would require demolition of the one-story Plasma Physics Laboratory building constructed in 1948. Project construction is anticipated to begin approximately summer 2000 and be completed approximately spring 2003.
